You won’t see huge visual changes like Apple made with iOS 7 last year, but there’s plenty of features for everyone to be excited about in iOS 8, whether its the new messaging tools, improved camera features, family sharing, Hand-off, or the sleek new Spotlight.

Before you jump headfirst into the biggest iOS release ever, get acquainted with the most important new features in this Cult of Mac guide to iOS 8:

Health Kit

HealthKit is Apple’s answer for the wave of wearable fitness devices that sync with your iPhone. The Health app compiles all of your favorite fitness stats in one easy to read application – heart rate, blood pressure, weight, activity, calories consumed and more.

Mayo Clinic and a host of other medical companies are onboard with the HealthKit to give patients better care so your doctor can keep tabs on your lazy ass from the comfort of his office and share it with other doctors – as long as you give him permission of course.

Camera

Popular camera apps like VSCO and Camera+ have had separate focal and exposure points for years, but Apple is finally adding this feature in iOS 8. Tap where you want to focus and you’ll see a light icon next to the focus box that you can slide up and down to adjust.

Third-Party keyboards

Custom keyboards are landing on iPhones and iPads this fall after Apple finally decided to give users more options than Jony Ive’s horrible shift key. To get a third party keyboard on your iPhone, first you’ll have to download the app from the App Store. Once you’ve installed a keyboard app on your device, you can add it to the system-wide keyboard the same way you toggle the emoji keyboard on/off.

Continuity/Hand-off

iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite were designed to work closer together than ever before with the addition of Continuity, which bridges the gap between iOS apps and Mac apps by allowing users to seamlessly transition from their Mac to their iPhones. With the new Handoff feature, users can start writing a paper in Pages on their Mac, and then have it sent over to the iPhone for finishing.

Photos

Along with new editing features that give users more control over exposure, shadows and color, Apple is making the Photos app better by adding the ability to search based on location, time or albums.

iCloud Photo Library ensures all your edits are automatically synced between devices. You can favorite photos to keep track of your best ones and if you don’t have enough storage Apple will boost you up to 200GB for $3.99 a month or $0.99 a month for 20GB.

Safari

The popular tab view from Safari for iPhone has been ported to the iPad, but you’ll never have to hit the Tab View button again thanks to a new quick toggle gesture that can be triggered with a two finger pinch on any webpage. Apple also added a new Sidebar that slides out to reveal bookmarks, reading lists, and shared links.

iCloud Drive

iCloud Drive makes its debut on iOS 8 as a way for users to store documents, pictures, spreadsheets and more within iCloud. It pretty much works like Dropbox and you can now access the iCloud Drive file structure from your Mac or iOS device.

Messaging

Snapchat, Whatsapp and every other disappearing messaging service were put on notice with some huge upgrades to iMessages today that add the ability to not only send quick video and voice messages, but also the option to make them expire.
iOS 8 adds a new Tap to Talk feature that lets you share video and photos with a simple gesture. Annoying group messages are a thing of the past now too with the option to leave a conversation, label threads, add/remove contacts mid-convo, and the option to add DND to specific threads.

Family Sharing

Got a ton of apps you wanna share with friends and family without giving them your iTunes ID info? Apple’s new Family Sharing lets you share your apps with up to 6 different people so they can enjoy all your apps without buying them on their own.
The feature ties your credit card to their account, but don’t worry about kids going on a spending spree. iOS 8 will ask you for permission to download apps so your toddler doesn’t run up a high bill.

Redesigned App Store

One of the most welcomed additions in iOS 8 is the overhaul of the App Store with new searching features, more categories to pinpoint what you want, and endless scrolling on search results.

Developers also get the ability to make video previews of their apps so you get a better idea what you’re buying, and if you’d like to test new apps, the new TestFlight feature gives devs the ability to send you access. Oh, and there’s finally going to be App Bundling so you can score big deals on a handful of apps at once.

QuickType

QuickType makes sending text messages a lot faster by predicting which words you’re about to type, so you can jump to the next word. The feature can be toggled by swiping up on your keyboard, or you can press and hold the emoji icon to bring up the updated Predictive keyboard toggle.

Interactive notifications

iOS 8 is full of tiny tweaks as well. Notification Center now lets users reply to messages from the NC panel. The camera app picked up the ability to set separate focus and exposure points. Handoff will let you seamlessly start a project on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac.
Touch ID can now be used with third-party apps so you never have to enter your password again. Siri can now be pulled up just by saying “hey Siri,” rather than pressing the homebutton. Phone calls can be answered from your Mac, and AirDrop is now compatible between iPhones and Macs.

Siri improvements

Siri receives a number of new upgrades in iOS 8, including the ability to to purchase iTunes items. When users compose a message with talk-to-text in Messages, Siri now dictates talk-to-text live as you’re speaking, so you know when she’s garbled a word like “areolas”. You can also find the feature on the main Siri screen.

Universal Spotlight

Searching for content with Spotlight is now quicker than ever, and it pulls from new sources like the internet, iTunes, nearby locations and others.

Wi-Fi Calling

Say goodbye to your beef monthly minutes plan. iOS 8 introduces calling over WiFi, and while not every carrier is supporting it out of the gate, T-Mobile beta testers have been enjoying it for weeks and AT&T says it will rollout support starting in 2015.

iOS 8 is the biggest release from Apple ever, with hundreds of new APIs and features that will completely change the way you use your iPhone. Features like Handoff, Health and Messages will be huge draws for customers looking for something new from iOS, but Apple’s engineers have also crammed dozens of new little features throughout the mobile OS.

Improved camera tools, battery statistics, new Safari tricks and more are included in today’s gigantic update, but you need to know where to look to find the true gems. Here’s a rundown of 18 incredible iOS 8 features you probably didn’t know about.

Locate battery-hogging apps

iOS lets you pinpoint which apps are killing your battery. To find out, just head to Settings >> General >> Usage >> Battery Usage.

Recover deleted photos

Deleted photos can now be recovered with the new Recently Deleted album in iOS 8. To retrieve any pics that were accidentally deleted just go to the Recently Deleted folder, select the photos you’re missing and tap recover.

Mark all iMessages as read

The Messages app in iOS 8 also has a new “Read All” option under the Edit feature so you can get rid of notifications without bothering to see what your momma just texted you. You can also choose to store messages for a 1 year, 1 month, or forever under the Settings menu.

Request desktop websites

Stop diddling with mobile websites on your iPhone. Safari picked up the ability to request desktop versions of websites. Tap the address bar and swipe up to find the new feature.

“Dark Mode”

Yosemite picked up a new Dark Mode and while iOS 8 doesn’t have the exact same feature, the new Grayscale mode in the Accessibilities settings will give you the next best thing by switching your gorgeous iPhone display into a black and white version.

Buy Shazam’d songs off Siri

Not only has Siri picked up the ability to recognize songs, via Shazam, but you can also purchase those songs in iTunes right from the Siri menu. It also works for any other iTunes content Siri pulls up, and you don’t even have to ask Siri “what song is playing?” to Shazam them. Just hold your home button and Siri will start analyzing the music after a few seconds of silence.

Organize iBooks by category or series

Apple decided to make iBooks a default app in iOS 8 and they’ve added some new organization features to go with it. Your books can now be organized by series and the categories button now filters sections by titles, authors, or categories

FaceTime call waiting

FaceTime still doesn’t have group calling, but Apple did add a Call Waiting feature to its video chat service that lets you decline incoming calls, or end your current call to accept the new one.

Get transit directions quicker

Starting in iOS 8, users will be able to run a search for locations in Apple Maps and use either Apple’s own driving and walking directions, or switch directly to another app already installed on your device via a simplified menu. The small UI change gives users quicker access to use transit directions and other services that were rumored for iOS 8’s Apple Maps but didn’t make the cut.

Timer with Burst Mode

Nearly every camera app in the App Store has a self timer but Apple is just getting around to adding its own in iOS 8. The setting can be toggled from the top of the app, includes 3 & 10 second options and shoots in Burst Mode so you get plenty of frames to choose from.

RSS feeds in Shared Link

Safari also picked up the ability to add RSS feeds to your Shared Links feed. To add a new RSS feed just visit the website in Safari, open up your shared links, go to Subscriptions and tap “Add Current Site.”

iTunes Radio Lockscreen

iTunes Radio is a lot more friendly with the lockscreen on iOS 8. Songs can be added to your wishlist by tapping the star. When you skip a track you get a notification of have many skips are left and there’s a new buy button to help juice iTunes sales.

Insert credit card deets with camera

iCloud Keychain will keep track of all your credit card details, but if you’re placing an online order and want to use a new card you can now use your camera to scan all the information off your card and insert it into the required fields.

Individual Private tabs in Safari

Safari can now multi-task between Private mode and regular. When switching from Private mode, iOS 8 now asks if you want to keep your naughty tabs or close them before shuffling you over to the regular and totally trackable version of Safari.

Lockscreen shortcuts

iOS 8 displays new app shortcuts on the lock screen based on your location. If you’re walking past Starbucks you might see their app shortcut pop up. Some users have also reported getting app suggestions on the home screen for stores like Costco and the Apple Store even when those apps aren’t installed.

Switch search to DuckDuckGo

Google might be the king of search but DuckDuckGo is our engine of choice at Cult of Mac. It’s a pain in the ass to use if your browser doesn’t integrate with it, but luckily iOS 8 is adding that ability. Turn it on under Settings >> Safari >> Search Engine >> DuckDuckGo.

Manage Apple ID

Rather than managing your Apple ID through iTunes or the App Store, iOS 8 has a new section under iCloud settings that lets you view and edit your personal information. You can also change your password, add credit cards and add members to your Family Share plan.

Emergency contact card

Now anyone can figure out how to help out your unconscious body without unlocking your iPhone, thanks to the new In Case of Emergency card on the iOS 8 lockscreen that you can be setup in the Health app

Beta1: Mất mục Sim Applictions để nạp tiền trên iPad.
Beta2: có Sim Application.

APPLICATIONS in APPSTORE:
Applications và Games có một số chưa cập nhật kịp cho iOS 8 nhấn vào sẽ bị văng ra. Điển hình là Viber chưa tương thích iOS 8 beta1, cần chờ bản upgrade nay mai.
Ngoài ra ngoài Springboard xuất hiện ứng dụng mới là Bug Reporter:



PHOTOS & CAMERA:
Điểm hay nhất là iPad đã có Panorama, ngoài ra có thể chụp tự động hẹn giờ:



Time-Lapse: tuỳ chỉnh mới của iOS 8:



Panorama, ứng dụng chụp toàn cảnh tuyệt vời nhất của iOS:



Camera chụp xong sẽ vào Album mới tên là Recently Added, muôn Edit phải nhấn mũi tên để lưu vào Camera Roll mới có nút Edit. Trong Recently Added không có nút Edit:



Nhấn mũi tên để lưu vao Camera Roll mới có nút Edit, phần Edit được chuyển từ cạnh dưới sang bên cạnh phải khi xoay ngang màn hình (landscape rotatetion):



Photos có thể lưu trên iCloud toàn bộ các thư mục trong Library:



LƯU Ý QUAN TRỌNG:
Khi chọn lưu ảnh trên iCloud sẽ mất hẳn tay Photos trong iTunes đồng thời sẽ mất mục My Photo Stream trong Photos.app:



WALLPAPERS & BRIGHTNESS:
Wallpaper trong beta1 vẫn bị zoom như 7.1.1.
Beta2 đã khắc phục bằng thêm nút Perspective Zoom OFF/ON mà không cần Reduce Motion ON trong Settings> Accessibility:



Beta1: Brightness trong Settings bị đơ không trượt được, chỉ dùng được trong Control Center.
Beta2: Brightness bình thường.



SAFARI: (bị văng liên tục khi đang viết bài này trên iPad, nhất là lúc upload hình)
Safari nhấn Statusbar không về đầu trang như 7.1.1, thay vào đó có nút (^) ở dưới bền phải để về đầu trang.
Khi lướt web, Safari sẽ bung Full Screen, lướt ngược lên sẽ hết Full Screen.
Trong Settings> Safari có thêm mục Favorites để vào xem các bookmarks đã Added trong Favorites Bar:



NOTE:
Note nhấn giữ vào bất kỳ trang sẽ có thêm chức năng Insert Photo để chèn hình trong Albums Library:



BATTERY:
Đã tested tình trạng pin sau 24 tiếng có sử dung WiFi & 4G lướt web, nghe nhạc, YouTube, FaceTime v.v... thấy có Ít hao hơn 7.1.1. Bản beta2 cũng ít hao pin hơn beta1.

KEYBOARDS:
Beta1: Trong Settings> General> Keyboards có thêm 2 chức năng Hardware Keyboard và Check Spelling.
Beta2: bỏ Spelling, thay vào đó là Predictive Typed String.



Bàn phím Telex vẫn... cùi bắp như 7.1.1, có thêm Suggested Words cả tiếng Anh lẫn tiếng Việt gây cảm giác hơi khó chịu dù đã tắt Auto-Correction. Khắc phục bằng cách Off hết 5 mục xong On lại như hình trên, nhưng cũng vẫn bị lại.
Beta2 vẫn cùi thế.
